Pretty Much Pintesting - Sewing An XXL Wet Bag

Newborns need a diaper change every 2 hours. Changing a cloth diaper every 2 hours means you're going to end your day with a lot of diapers that need someplace to go. I've had enough issue getting a full days worth of my little lambs diapers fitting into the wet bag I have so I knew I needed something larger.

With the full intention of using this bag for my daughter until my son got here (because having only one wet bag for cloth diapers really wasn't cutting it) I needed to get to work.

Today's post is based on this pin and the information found here. I pretty much followed the same pattern and made a couple of adjustments to make this suit my needs.

I like wetbags because you can use them for more than just cloth diapering.  Take them to the pool for wet clothing and towels.  Maybe you have a little one who is potty training.  This would be a handy thing to have in the diaper bag for any accidents.  Much cuter than a plastic grocery bag, don’t you think?  This wetbag ends up being 9” x 12” and will fit about 3 large cloth diapers, but you can certainly adjust the sizes to make a larger bag.

To start, you’ll need the following materials:

*Two pieces 10” x 12.5” cotton fabric

*One 4” x 14” strip of cotton fabric

*Two pieces 10” x 12” PUL (polyurethane laminated fabric)

*9” zipper

*matching thread

*I read that polyester thread prevents wicking (leaking of moisture in the bag), so I usually use that if I have it.

*baby powder or tissue paper

With shiny side of the PUL up, lay your zipper on top of a short side. 

Place on of the cotton pieces of fabric on top of that, ride side of the fabric touching the zipper.

Pin together.

 Using your zipper foot, sew along the side of the zipper, as close to the zipper as you can.  

Turn both layers over and make the cotton and the PUL even along the sides and bottom.  

Topstitch closely to the zipper.

Before you, Repeat above steps for the other side of the zipper using the remaining outer and PUL pieces of fabric. I stopped to make the straps. Because my bag was so much bigger I was  going to need 2 straps to properly distribute the weight of the bag.

Set the bag aside for now.

Let’s make the straps.

 Fold the 5” x 14” strip in half

 and sew 1/4” seam along the long side.

 Then I sewed along the top of one of the edges.

Turn right side out and topstitch along both long sides.

Your bag no longer needs to set off to the side

Pin the straps in your sandwich of, PUL/ zipper/ straps/ cotton fabric. Make sure the straps are inside the bag. To make certain I caught the straps I left a little extra of the strap peeking out of the wrong side where I would be sewing.

Take the two outer cotton layers and line up as evenly as you can, right sides together.  So your PUL is pulled up and out of the way.  Sew 1/4” seam down each side, making sure to catch the zipper at the top and also the handle that you pinned in.   

 Leave the bottom open.  

Now take the two PUL layers and also line them up as evenly as possible, shiny sides together.

Leave the bag how it is in the above picture.

So the zipper is on the inside, and the cotton layers are still showing the wrong side.  The PUL and the cotton layers are NOT connected at all besides at the zipper.  Sew along all  3 sides of the PUL, leaving the zipper side open.  Since you are sewing on the non-shiny sides, your machine should work fine on this part without tissue paper or baby powder.  

Turn the bag right side out by pulling the cotton layer down over the PUL layer tuck the bottom of the cotton layers and iron. Topstitch closed. I actually didn't bother to stitch the PUL to the cotton. I left it loose.

Right when I was about to sew the end of my bag shut I noticed there was a cut in the fabric.

I fixed it by placing a scrap of the same fabric inside the bag. Making sure that I only had those two layers of fabric before I began sewing.

And then zig zag stitched over the problem.

Now to add snaps to those handles.

100% new to using a press and applying Kam Snaps and 100% disinterested in wasting time or money I went to YouTube to find an instructional video. This is the one I chose to use and it was everything I needed to know about properly using my new crafting toy.

I was careful to do my best to line the snaps up so they should be placed in the same spot on each strap.

Once you have the snaps on go hang the bag from wherever you're going to need it for now. I tend to hang the wet bag from the crib so I did. As you can see my plan to make a massive wet bag was quite the success. Now my only worry is that it's too large.

If your bag turns out to be too large don't forget that wet bags have tons of other uses. For instance this is a great size for holding wet swimsuits and beach things.

Cloth Diaper Review - Sassy Cloth

This was the last of the diapers I was going to be able to buy as a result of my friends purchases. I did what I could to make the money I got go just about as far as I could.

Sassy Cloth was actually one of the first people I came across on Etsy when I was looking for what diapers I would be buying with the recent addition to my PayPal coffers. She was also one of the first people I saw offering a bargain basement priced deal on a cloth diaper that I'd seen.

Amazed at how low the prices were ($12 - $12.50 per diaper) I emailed her:

I just made a couple of sales to friends and am shopping Etsy for some cloth diapers.
How on earth are you able to sell yours for so little!? Am I missing something? These are diapers not covers correct? How many inserts do they come with?
Do you have any mario brothers or geeky fabric?
Could any sort of deal be made for a bulk purchase?

I waited for a response and meanwhile went ahead and bought the other diapers I was looking at. Eventually I caved and without a response from the seller I bought a couple of her diapers.

My diapers are not covers, it's one size pockets, there is a pocket opening on the back of diaper for the insert. One insert is included with each diaper, or you can opt out from insert (if you have other inserts you like to use) with 8% discount.
Currently I don't have any Mario prints, but could order some if you would like the diaper with it. Just have to warn you that Mario fabric is pretty rare and therefore more expensive, so the price of diaper will be higher accordingly (depending on price of fabric).
About geeky fabric, could you explain what exactly you mean about it?

Diapers were ordered on January 18th, 2013 package arrived on the 28th. The packaging had minimal plastic.

Having already bought and received my Courageous Baby fluff I was less "worried" about how thin the diapers seemed.

Actually these are a bit thicker than the Courageous Baby diapers.

The inserts are no joke. I put them in the dyer with my dyer balls and some other inserts on delicate and had to run them through again. These are thick. I was loving this insert. But it seems every time I wash them they need extra drying time.

These were another diaper where I was really happy with the pocket opening. Nice and tight but nothing unreasonable. Once again, the opening is tight enough that you will not be able to shake your insert out into your wet bag.

Not having a lower snap on the flap left me with a little more of a learning curve than expected.

With some help from the hubs I was able to get a picture of the little lamb in one of her diapers.

Absolutely crazy about how adorable these diapers on I made sure to put her in the other one the following day. We sat watching Sesame Street and I snapped a picture of her cute little John Deere booty to send to a friend who happens to own the same diaper (only she got hers in a diaper swap).

 Moments later she rolled over and I saw this!

I ordered on January 18th, 2013 and it arrived on January 26th, 2013.

I was immediately impressed with the quality and design of the diaper once I opened it. I was nuts about the pocket opening. Once again it wasn't too tight and was just what I wanted.

How about that insert?

The amount of snaps to adjust the rise and fit as well as those side snaps were just wonderful. There wasn't going to be an extra little bit of fabric hanging loose as a result of not having quite enough snaps on your tabs.

Getting a picture of my little lamb in this diaper was nowhere near as difficult as I was worried it might be.

After about a week of ownership of these beautiful diapers the little lamb pooped for a second time in them. This time is was much wetter and even (ugh) a little snotty. She was playing in the floor when I heard her pooping. When I got her up to take her to her room and change her diaper this is what was left in the floor.

The mess didn't appear to leak out of the legs but as you can probably see there were some small solids left on my floor - gross.

Not ready to give up I kept using them, so I tried doubling the inserts - she still leaked. Not to this degree but the back of the diaper was still wet.

During a day when the little lamb was being particularly diligent about trying to use the potty, she came to me saying that she needed to go. When I removed the diaper it had three large puddles of pee.

As I sat it aside while I put my little one on the toilet I saw no evidence that the pee was absorbing at all. I ended up having to dump the pee into the bathtub.

 This time however there was no leakage from the sides before all of this.

Photographing a puddle of pee with your cell phone is a difficult task. I ran the pictures I took by a couple of friends to vote on which they thought may portray the situation most accurately.

A week later as I she laid in my lap and I read her a story she peed. And it ran out of the back of the diaper and all over myself, my bed, and my sheets.

If I were to rate these diapers on a scale of 1 diaper (meaning it's a diaper I wouldn't recommend) to 10 diapers (meaning out of this world awesome).

Because I barely have a proper Hyena Cart account and know very little about the site there was no communication between the seller and myself.

The price of these diapers was insanely low and unbeatable at $7 a piece.

I chose the insert option of, "4 layer bamboo blend."

They arrived really quickly and all packaged in plastic. They seemed so thin and light - not at all exhibiting the usual amount of bulk I've come to associate with fluff. I was almost worried they'd be too light (only two of the three diapers are shown because the Green Eggs & Ham diaper was no longer clean.)

The inserts I loved from the get go. They're wonderful. If for any reason you get an Oh My Fluff! diaper and dislike it I feel like you should still be able to walk away from the purchase feeling pretty satisfied with those inserts.

The pocket opening on these is just what I like and feel comfortable with. Tight but not too tight. Keep in mind it's tight enough that if you're like me and prefer to shake your inserts out of a wet diaper into your wet bag - this isn't possibly with this design.

The amount of snaps to adjust the rise and fit along with the way they are on the side tabs is just . . outstanding. There was zero learning curve for me so this was a massive plus.

Months and months (and months and months) of only having four cloth diapers to use on our little girl leaves me with laundry that needs to be done at an alarming frequency. I found myself with a little extra money to go towards something other than purchasing supplies to make much-needed reusable and/or cost cutting items for our home. Purchasing another cloth diaper was a bit of a no-brainer idea of what I could do with the money.

I purchased the diaper on December 27th, 2012, it was marked as shipped according to PayPal on January 11th, 2013, and it arrived at my house somewhere around the 21st of January.

The price of this custom diaper (I think) is reasonable for what you're getting at $20. But I know a lot of women who feel $20 is too much to pay for a cloth diaper. From what I've seen it would be unreasonable to expect a price lower than this for a diaper with this sort of detail.

When the diaper came, the inside contents of the package, smelled like berries. Once I removed the diaper from the plastic and showed my little girl she ran away with it to go show her daddy.

Here is the diaper all laid out.

Having only used FuzziBunz, these diapers took a little adjustment for me. The snaps on these diapers can overlap each other when you close your little persons booty inside. This was new. Also, there isn't the same amount of snaps on the flaps as a FuzziBunz (because it's not a FuzziBunz diaper.)

The insert for the diaper is a microfiber cloth - it appears to be exactly the sort of cloth I bought from WalMart in the automotive section and used in the prefold diapers I made.

The pocket opening for the diaper has a bit of a large gap. So far it hasn't proved to be a problem for me in using the diaper.

When my daughter wore these overnight, her pee leaked out and her pants and diaper needed to be changed.

Another day she had a large poop. The poop semi-solid poop leaked out of the leg and onto the pants. As I stood in my bathroom washing off the diaper I saw that the poop was also on the outside of the legs of the diapers as well. The entire resulting mess was bad enough that I had to shower the kid and myself.

This seller has a feedback policy of only leaving feedback once feedback is left. Having a brand new store of my own in need of feedback I politely requested that she leave feedback. After leaving my own feedback first over a week later there was still none left for me as well.

Her responses are timely and polite. If you have any questions before buying I don't think you should encounter much if any issue with getting a response back.

Getting pictures of my little lamb in her new diaper to leave in my feedback was difficult. Being nearly 2 (21 months at the time) means being perpetually on the move.

The Harry Potter Design is embroidered directly onto the PUL.
