Pintesting - Making Makeup

With the decision to be as chemical free as possible came the difficult task of throwing out a lot of beauty products I'd come to really love. This, of course, included 99% of my makeup. I don't tend to wear a lot of it anymore but I'm a big fan of powder.

Today's pin test comes via this pin and the info found here.

Starting with a base of arrowroot powder

slowly add in cocoa powder

and cinnamon

until you get something close to your skin tone.

I didn't really see any change at all similar to powder when I first tried brushing some on using my finger tips. Because I had already placed an order for some tins and bottles to hold some of these things I've been concocting as a result of all of these pintests, I decided that I might be happier if I tried the more solid base.

Pintesting - Chemical Free Beauty - Mud Scrub

I absolutely cannot explain why but I was super excited to make this particular scrub.

Today's pintest comes via this pin and the information found here.

Ingrediants:
1 C Sugar (white, brown, cane)  - I used white sugar
5 TBSP Coffee grounds  - I don't actually drink coffee so i had to go out and buy the smallest amount I could for this pintest.
1/4 C oil  (veggie oil, almond oil, extra virgin olive oil, baby oil…) - since it was alreayd out and is SO wonderful I used coconut oil
1 tsp Peppermint Extract
1 tsp Vanilla Extract
Following Directions:
Because my peppermint oil wasn't here yet I set my mix aside to finish once it arrived. That's when I remembered I hadn't added the vanilla extract so I went back, added it, and stirred it with the opposite end of my wooden spoon.

So how was the scrub? So excited was I that I tried it the very night I made it even though I didn't have the peppermint oil yet. When my husband came into the bathroom he remarked, "Coffee?" He's no coffee drinker either but said he liked the smell. When I had him touch my skin afterward he said it felt like I'd just put on lotion.

I also feel confident that the scrubs I use that contain coconut oil will be of great help with the stretch marks from my pregnancy, both to moisturize the areas where my skin is expanding and to help curb how bad my stretch marks may end up without some sort of attention.

Pintesting - Chemical Free Beauty - Vanilla Brown Sugar And Coconut Scrub

Today's pintest comes via this pin and the information here.

Ingredients:
1 1/4 cups of brown or raw sugar - I used brown sugar because it's what I have and isn't that the general idea we're all striving for when we make these things at home?

6-8 tablespoons of organic unrefined coconut oil - if you want to get technical I added 16 1/2 TBSPs because I couldn't find my TBSP

15-20 drops of vanilla essential oil (may be substituted with vanilla fragrance)

Following Directions:
I'd ordered vanilla oil but it wouldn't be here for a few days so I set this aside for the time being.

Once it arrived I was more than happy to add it and mix up my new wonderful scrub.

I was able to put most of it into a half-pint jar. Guess I need to test this out ASAP so i can get my quart-sized jar back.

It says that your scrub needs to be stored in an airtight container and used within 6 months. I kinda doubt this will make it 6 months.

So how was it? Heavenly. The smell was completely amazing. I shaved my legs after using it and no moisture was stripped from my legs as a result. I can't recommend this one enough.

Pintesting - Chemical Free Beauty - Lemon Sugar Scrub

You may remember once I made the decision to rid my life of as many excess chemicals as I can (there are areas where I slip - we all do) I threw out a lot of beauty products I found to be harboring toxins I was previously unaware of.

Today's pintest comes via this pin and the info found here.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup sugar or 1/2 cup salt - I used sugar because sometimes I have cuts and bruises from traipsing through the woods. Who wants to come home with the intention of relaxing and rub salt and lemon into a wound!?
1 tablespoon olive oil

2 tablespoons lemon juice

The directions are simple: Mix all ingredients in a small bowl. - I mixed mine in the 1/2 pint jar I intended to store this in.

The resulting mix was too watery for me.

I like a firm scrub that I can pretty much hold in my hand. To remedy this "problem" I just added more sugar until the mix had reached the consistency I preferred.

How was it? The olive oil tends to still keep it really loose so I had to give it a bit of a mix before using it. It had a very light lemon scent wasn't at all unpleasant to use.

Around 80% of the time I shower I shower with my little lamb. The evening I tried this scrub was no exception.

There I was scrubbing and showering away when I look over and see her laying on her tummy not far from the drain. I thought she was pretending to swim. She wasn't. She was drinking what was washing off of me! It was a small battle to get her to stop.

Once I got her off her tummy she stood next to me with her mouth open trying to catch juice in her mouth.

When we got out of the shower I heard the dog in there licking at things.
